About Pyramid Ants

Pyramid ants are outdoor soil-nesting ants in the genus Dorymyrmex. Buren’s pyramid ant, Dorymyrmex bureni, occurs throughout Florida, including South Florida and the Florida Keys. Workers move quickly across warm soil and pavement and may be recognized by a small pyramid-shaped projection on the thorax, although close examination is often needed.

Colonies favor open, sunny ground and commonly produce a low crater of excavated soil around one nest entrance. They may become noticeable in lawns, along sidewalks, near patios, and in sparsely vegetated landscaping. Pyramid ants are not considered important structural or public-health pests.
